A study on some basic clinical examination results by place of birth and economic class of newly entered college students

Abstract
Health and disease are distributed unequally in populations.
These unequalities are mostly related to socio-economic status and culture.
However, it is quite true that research on the relationships and their determinants has too many defects to establish special causal linkages.
Among the culture and socioeconomic class variables which are complex characteristic in tie Korean cultural setting, 3 classes of economic status and placess of growth in terms of urban and rural are selected as the hypothetical independant variables.
The total of 4006 students (3491 of male and 515 of female) newly entered Korea University in 1981 was sellected as the study samles, and visual acuity, urine protein, urine sugar were checked and chest P-A radiography was done. The summarized results of the epidemiological analysis of the data obtained were as follows:
(1) Prevalence of abnormal visual acuity of less than 1.0 were about 65% in Rt & Lt eyes each, more prevalent in urban group of both sexes and in higher economic status in female statistically.
(2) Protein in urine was detected in 16.70% of male and 19.61% of female of which 6.31% (male) and 3.03% (female) showed positive result again at the secondary confirmation check performed after 6 months. Suagr in urine was detected in 36 females and one male (1.06% of total) of which 17.86% showed positive after 6 months.
(3) There was no significant difference in blood pressure between urban and rural group, but the higher the economic status, the higher the average blood-pressure in both sexes. The systolic blood pressure of males was higher than that of females.
(4) A total of 51 ¢¥active pulmonary tuberculosis patiants (1.27%) was detected at chest P-A check, 1.28% of male and 1.17% of female.
